Notes

This yarn, a fingering-weight kid mohair, was bought at the market at Stitches East quite a while ago. Brooks Farm still seems to be in business, although I did not see this particular yarn on their website.

A simple crescent-shaped shawl in Garter Stitch, knit from the top down. No short rows! Good for when watching TV. I’m using a large needle for a loose, lacy look with a fuzzy yarn.

Since I wasn’t really pleased with how the shawl was looking from the cast-on down - cast-on looking too tight and the body too bubbly-looking below the cast-on for lack of a better term at the moment, I decided to start over and look at more ideas for crescent-shaped shawls.

In a pattern search, I came across Holly Chayes’ Shawl Geometry Book Two, which has 39 recipes for shawl shapings, 6 of them for crescents. These are knit similarly to the method you’d use to knit a round doily, only not joined in the round. The incs for shaping are evenly spaced out, and I think I’ll be happier with the result.

After swatching the Eight Unequal Wedge Crescent which has 10 incs over 2 rows, I decided the wings in front would be too long. See 2nd photo above for swatch before blocking. So I swatched the Eight Equal Wedge Crescent which has only 8 incs EOR. I think it will give me the shape I want. Rather than leaving the YOs open, I will close them on the following rows as Left-leaning and Right-leaning incs to better blend into the GS fabric. (On a US 9 needle, the YOs would be HUGE!)

As you can tell from the swatch photos, a garter tab start is needed, and will solve my concern about the cast-on edge in my previous attempt.

Still dithering about this shawl. The problem with 8 incs over 2 rows is that it will make the shawl wider and less deep in back, and more like a scarf than a shawl. Maybe I’ll try 6 incs over 2 rows, a Six Equal Wedge Crescent should give me the depth I’m looking for without the ends being too long.

After a time-out of over a year (LOL), I’m swatching for a 6 Equal Wedge Crescent.
