This Candide pattern from 1991 looked easy enough to knit up quickly. Besides, it says Easy to Knit right on it! lol I remember working on it while watching that TV mini-series Scarlett with Joanne Whalley and Timothy Dalton, about Scarlett and Rhett after Gone with the Wind, so that makes it 1994. Isn’t Google wonderful? ; )
I was not able to find the exact name of this color either on the Ravelry database, or on Bartlett’s website, so it must be discontinued. It is darker and bluer than Spruce with some flecks of white.
There might have been some changes made in the yoke pattern, but for the most part it was made as the pattern was written. I do remember, however, that putting in the sleeve was a pain in the butt, and it was just a modified drop-shoulder! It took 3 tries, but I finally got it to my satisfaction, and then I had a very warm sweater to wear.
It has stretched out just fine so I can still wear it, even as I myself have grown a bit over nearly 20 years. : ]
The styling of this sweater was an inspiration when I made the Plum Tunic Gansey, and if I were ever to make this pattern again, I would make it the same way as I made the Plum one. Join the front and back after the split welt to knit in the round, have false side seams, underarm gussets, and pick up for the sleeves around the armholes and knit them down seamlessly. The Plum one was a cinch for me to make in a month, so making this pattern seamlessly should go as fast.
Update - July 14, 2022
As time seems to have shifted my weight distribution a bit, I wish this weren’t a tunic style, but had a ribbed bottom.
