Crochet-hook cast on.

One row knit, before beginning pattern.

First stitch every row: slip purlwise.
Last stitch every row: knit.

Soft grey portion will be the interior of the headband.
I’ll use the undiluted variegated yarn for the rest, reserving the ball of brown (if needed) to finish the crown.

I may have made a mistake to try marrying up this limp, thin, lifeless version of Canadiana with the much more robust Caron. Despite my usually tight tension, the grey fabric is coming out bigger than the other!
I think I should stop, though I just completed the first earflap.
Possible solutions:
arrow_right rip and restart, but with fewer stitches on the grey side.
arrow_right rip and restart, using a much smaller needle for the grey yarn.
arrow_right rip and restart, without the grey yarn.

For now, being as stubborn as I am, I’m going to continue, despite the inequality. I’ll decide after working a few rounds of the crown, if it’s wearable or doomed to be frogged. smiling_imp

Replaced grey with brown, so the inside surface of the headband is mostly brown - worked intarsia-wise.
The variegated yarn ran out partway up the crown, so the top of the crown is more of the brown.
