2015-06-15 Here I am jumping down the rabbit hole again and following my knitting buddy Ginette into - of all things - a sock knitting KAL! I need my head examined! But I have sock yarn - nothing fancy, just plain old solid Kroy that’s probably decades old - and I have plenty of double-pointed needles and know how to use ‘em. So, with the intention of helping my friend with any hiccups along the way, I’m joining it! Oy!
2015-06-16 Well, I have a small assortment of this yarn - two tones of beige, black, and white. I’ve begun one cuff with the smallest partial ball of beige - colour #490, dye lot #220, with the partially formed plan to change to black or white when the cuff is done. Maybe work each clue in a different colour? Or cuffs, heels, and toes in the beige and the rest in black and/or white? We’ll see.
I used the knitted cast on, just because I remembered how to do it. I suppose I should have looked online for a cast on that’s suitable for 2x2 ribbing, but I didn’t want to get up and go to the computer. Yes, I’m lazy.
2015-06-21 So, I’ve finished clue 1 for the left leg, and have begun the right leg.
I have also discovered that, despite having more knitting needles than any single knitter could wish for, I only have one set of double-pointed needles the exact size that I did the left leg with. I have put the first leg on two stitch holders, in order to start the second one.
2015-06-24 Yes, the partial sock (clue 1) was scanned with a wad of McDonald’s napkins stuffed inside it.
2015-6-26 Clue 1 for both socks DONE!! Red stitch holder = Right Leg.
2015-06-28 What a difference between empty sock leg and filled with a water bottle!!
2015-07-18 Done! Well, all but the grafting of the toes. I need to check them on the intended feet - Susan, our group’s machine-knitter - before cutting the yarns and grafting them. She doesn’t show up every Sunday. Next time she does show up, I’ll see if I need to rip the toes to lengthen or shorten them before cutting and grafting.
I was pleasantly surprised to have been able to complete each sock with only the yarn from its same dye lot - fraternal twins socks.
2015-08-01* Well, the intended recipient didn’t show up a for knitting meeting a third Sunday in a row, so the toes are grafted and all ends - all four of ‘em! - have been neatly woven in. I got Paulette to model them for the final photos, even though they’re a tad long for her feet, and Ginette took the photos. The only thing I changed from the pattern was the length of the ribbing; it had gone a couple of rounds past what the pattern stated, and I left it that way. This project is FINISHED!!
My gauge - on the stockinette soles - came eight-and-a-quarter stitches per inch. I’ve never knitted anything so dense in my life! In case they ever need darning, the remaining yarn goes to whomever they go to - anywhere, as long as I never have to darn them.
I found that after working on them for a while, I had trouble re-focusing on the computer screen. Lines of text were doubled! Stacked neatly on top of each other!!!
