Notes

I only have this one cake of this yarn. I’m sure there isn’t enough to knit the whole shawl, but I can add a different yarn for the lace portion - solid orange. If I run out of this purple/white yarn, before reaching the end or the garter stitch section, I can add some green/white.

October 28, 2021

Only one stitch marker is necessary in the garter stitch section - placed just before the center stitch and only ‘used’ on Row 1, where there are increases either side of the centre stitch.

No added selvedge stitches.every row begins with slip 1 purlwise, and ends with knit 1.

October 31, 2021

After missing the edge increases a couple of times, I now have stitch markers two stitches from each edge.

July 18, 2022

Ran out of purple/white yarn.
No idea what green/white yarn I had been thinking of last year, so dug out a cone of rust yarn.
Still doing garter stitch section.

It’s getting worked on again. Soon, it needs a longer cable.

Just picked this up again.
Pattern calls for a total of 207 stitches in the garter section. Oops! I now have 231!

I need to read the pattern to see if the number really matters or if there’s an option for enlarging.

Reread pattern again. Three sizes. I’m aiming for the largest, of course. Goal stitch count for the garter section is 277 at 108 rows.

I must be some kind of dunce. The slip-stitch selvedge I was first taught to do by my grandmother in 1954 is fine on straight knitting. It’s limiting on the diagonal, and I know that. I did it anyway. As a result, the top edge of this shawl won’t be as stretchy as one might like. Oh well. Maybe I’ll remember the next time. There’s no way I’m ripping this out to start over.

June 26, 2023

I’m up to 267 stitches!! Goal: 277. Getting there!! slightly_smiling_face

July 9, 2023

My end of row count does NOT match at the end of first lace repeat. I guess it’s OK, as long as the lace bits line up.

July 12, 2023

So, I didn’t count at the end of each span (17 stitches), and discovered two errors. One place where there was an extra yarnover, and another place where a yarnover was absent.
This is why I LOVE this lacy stitch pattern! One too many? Do a 2together; it’s fixed. Missing one? Tease some extra length from where it was supposed to be and hook it up to the current row. I know where to find my errors, but no one seeing the shawl in use will ever know!

July 14, 2023

Knitting merrily along on row 9 of the second border chart, and discover I’m a stitch shy on the last part, after all the repeats! How or where I lost it, I couldn’t see.
Taking advantage of the ‘bar’ formed when one does kfb, I did that just before the p5, only needing to p4 after the increase.

It would be nice were I ever to work a pattern row with no errors discovered on previous rows!!

July 18, 2023

I have a LOT of this pinky-peachy yarn left. So, I’m going to continue the lace border some longer.

July 20, 2023

I have begun row 6 of the third chart of the lacy border. It should be the last, but I’ll continue. I have a lot more of this yarn; better to use it up all in one place. I guess I’ll be working on this for the rest of the summer.

July 21, 2023

I need to COUNT between markers on the purl rows!!
As I was doing row 7 of the third border repeat, I just dropped the extra yarnovers I had erroneously added two rows previous. Twice.

August 2, 2023

It’s 31” to end of fifth repeat of border.
Time to begin garter stitch portion.

August 7, 2023

So, due to flipping of picot bind off and ruffling too, I have undone what had been bound off, and am adding more rows of garter stitch. I don’t think this mix of leftover industrial knitting threads will block well, so … I’m considering
arrow_right going down a needle size?
arrow_right doing a different bind off?
arrow_right actually killing the acrylic? (It all burn-tests as synthetic, but that doesn’t mean acrylic.

In the meantime, more rows of garter stitch.

August 11, 2023

After adding another six rows of garter stitch, the flipping is conquered!
The picot bind off is going to take FOREVER!
