It’s only a few years since I made this, but I have absolutely no idea where the beginning of it is! It was one of my fruitless efforts to use up odd-balls from my neverending stash. Triangles. Mitred squares. Striped mitred squares. Each picked up along the side(s) of another. No sewing! All tied together by the a couple of ‘rounds’ of mitered squares, and then the very wide and fuller-than-the-perimeter border from the Trinity Stitch Shawl. (I just LOVE that border!) Not having bothered to make it turn the corners, I just did it on the sides and then filled in the corner voids with purple mitred squares.
It was only after seeing one of the photos yesterday that it occurred to me that it is reminiscent of Mondrian’s art - thus its name.

Ah! I have been supplied with the correct term for what I did in making this blanket: Freeform knitting. Thank you to a bunch of folks on Knitting Paradise!
I was only familiar with the term ‘freeform’ in relation to very small motifs and a modicum of planning. This generously covers a queen sized bed, and there wasn’t much planning.

During Susan and Jeremy’s visit, it came out that their boy, Robbie, has moved into an apartment in Boston, has a girlfriend, and will probably be cold come winter, since the heating bill will be too high. So, I suggested they take one or more of my blankets to give to him. I laid blankets out on the bed; Susan took snapshots of them, and sent them to Robbie. He only wanted one, and this was it. Off it goes with them in the morning, and them on to Boston when Robbie visits them on Sunday. Yay!! One less for my survivors to deal with!!
