Notes

A big and boxy version of this sweater.

So I had a cardigan I knit ten years ago that never fit me that well, and I decided to unravel it and use the yarn to make a different cardigan. This was doable because Mountain Mohair is a sturdy, long-lasting yarn, though it did mean a lot of ends to weave in where the yarn was weakened and had to be broken.

I should have taken notes on my mods, oh well. Here’s what I remember:

  • I went down 3 needle sizes for 1x1 rib on button band, cuffs and hem, because I know the yarn’s properties very well and wanted to preserve stretch and avoid floppy flare.

  • Kept decreasing the sleeves til I reached 42 stitches. The sleeves in this pattern are snug, btw, which doesn’t bother me with my bird arms, but normal humans may want to add stitches for more ease around the arm.

  • Button band pick-up: skipped every 5th stitch (roughly)

  • POCKETS! Of course I added pockets. This time I placed them further out toward the hips than in my last two cardigans, starting two knit stitches past the end of the cable chart. Pockets are 31 st in stockinette with the knit side facing forward (see pics). This matches the width of 48 stitches in (tighter gauge) cable pattern on the fronts. At the bottom of the pocket the picked-up stitches are rejoined to the main body stitches before beginning the bottom ribbing. This leaves just the cast-on top of the pocket and the edge near the button band to be sewn down. My cast-on was provisional just for less bulk at the top seam. I’m winging this.

  • Used the Crochet Cast On Button Hole for 4 button holes 26 stitches apart, 3 stitches each

  • I deliberately made it roomy, but the stockinette back is excessively roomy. If I make it again I’ll reduce the stitch count in back and add shaping
