Notes

This yarn had started being made into a linen stitch hexigon cardigan, but I decided the fabric would make a better blanket. First I tried following a linen stitch square pattern because I didn’t feel like swatching and doing the math to determine an appropriate starting chain length for the number of cakes I have. After doing a dozen rounds or so I realized I prefer a rectangular throw rather than a square, so I ripped it out again and started a rectangle. It’s a good thing that this yarn frogs OK!

After doing 10 rounds of linen stitch, I was already getting bored so I decided to switch to hdc camel stitch to add some variety and visual interest. After 5 rounds of camel, I did a round of sc in the third loops and transitioned back to the linen. With the addition of the camel stitch, I realized I had to name this project using one of the other names of linen stitch - moss stitch, and since it’s in the round, it became Around the Mossy Camel. The tonal yarn hides the pattern a bit, but I love the way it accents the camel stitch up close. I’ve got 5 cakes of this yarn, so my plan is to just go until I run out, ending on camel stitches of 5 rounds or more.

The pic with the project bag is because I went on a mini-vacation with my daughter last week in New Hampshire. We had a great time hiking and going on a scenic train ride, and we also stopped in the LL Bean Outlet. I was lucky enough to find one of their classic totes that had been returned that had my actual initials! And in the right size for a project bag in one of my favorite colors (green). Very fun.

I am getting close to the end of my third cake. I didn’t take a picture or measure at the end of the second cake, but I’ll try to remember to do so after this third one.

I have switched to working in a spiral to try to minimize the very visible seam up the middle of one of the sides. In 20/20 hindsight, I wish I had started and ended the rounds in the corners which would have hidden it better. I may make another of these blankets using the technique like described in this YouTube video by Play Hooky with Me.

Also, my rectangle is getting much more square like as it gets bigger. I should have realized the small rectangle grows proportionally on all sides. I’d like to try getting that right on a second try as well.

On to my last cake!

Before the 5th round of camel:
180g
After 6th:
118g = 62g = 31g per round
After 7th:
86g = 32g per round

I want to finish with 1 round of sc and one round of crab stitch. I probably have enough yarn left to do one more round of hdc camel stitch, but I think I’ll play it safe and go right into the final two rounds.

This will be done just in time to gift it to my sister Sue when I see her this weekend for Thanksgiving round 2. She had asked for a blanket that is “less holey” than the Seaside Winter Blanket that I made her years ago and think this blue will go nicely with her living room. The final picture in the outdoor light is a much more accurate representation of the pretty blue color.
