Check your gauge! I crochet loosely and, even after going down a hook size, I ran out of yarn with the kit and had to order more.
I originally bought Stylecraft Special DK for this but, when the official yarn pack went on sale, I decided to splurge. The 100% Merino yarn is gorgeous and soft, and the colors are really beautiful, I’m so glad I went with the higher end for Mom.
My modifications/notes:
- Start with a double magic circle.
- Round 1: remember this is US sc (pattern is in UK terms).
- Round 2: pull slip stitch tight.
- Use standing stitches to start each round.
- On rounds 3 & 4, and others that are just sc, wait to weave in ends until next round is done.
- Round 5: count to make sure there are 24 stitches, don’t cut yarn, the next round is (gasp!) the same color, don’t worry about curl.
- Rounds 15, 16 - see hand-drawn chart (these are really hard to memorize and hard to follow in paragraph form). I also cut and pasted from the PDF into my outliner, put the instructions in bullet form, and translated into US terms -- much easier to follow.

I made a test motif to round 8 and decided to go down a hook size (to 3 mm) from the recommended one. First impression is I love this yarn, and the pattern is pretty but detailed (and there will be a gazillion ends to weave in as I go).

I have finished the seven dark hexagons tonight and will add a picture tomorrow when the light is better. This really is a time consuming pattern but it should be lovely when it is done.
After I take a break and work on my Rosslyn blanket for a bit, next I will do seven (half) of the medium hexagons.

I’ve made a start on my first seven medium hexagons. These are coming out nicer than my first ones which does make sense given the practice. So much work in these! But the colors are delicious and the Merino wool is yummy too -- it is spoiling me.

I have finished the first seven (of fourteen) medium hexagons, but I am concerned. It seems my tension has gotten tighter, to the extent that these are noticeably (about an inch) smaller than the dark ones. Blocking will have to help, and I hope it doesn’t make the blanket ripple. I like the texture of the smaller ones, so going up a half hook size for the rest is not a solution. But they certainly are beautiful all together!

I’ve started the remaining 19 motifs today. I’ve decided that I will do all of them assembly line style going forward, rather than doing them half a dozen at a time like I have been doing. I think this will help make sure the remaining motifs are the same size.

Time for this project to go into hibernation for a bit. I have finished one complete light hexagon and I am up to round 12 (of 18) on the remaining 18. Now that I have decided that this will be a Mother’s Day gift, which means I have six months to complete it, I’ve decided to turn my full attention to some other projects for a while.

Time for the final push on this! I just found out that my Mom is coming home (from their winter home in TX) early this year, so I have roughly 3 weeks to finish off this blanket for her. (It was going to be a Mother’s Day present, but we’re planning a “girls’ night out” with my two sisters and Mom, so I could gift them all their blankets then if I get it done.)
I sure hope I have enough yarn to finish the project.

I have finished round 16 on the remaining 18 hexagons. I’m quite sure now that I’ll have to order more yarn. I want to wait until I’m a little further to be able to better estimate how much I’ll need.

I ran out of white (Snow) with 3 hexagons to go for round 17.
Rather than follow my own advice and get as far as I could with what I have left to better gauge how much I really need, I ordered more than enough. Sigh. Hopefully, it will get to me as fast as it did last time which was only 5 days.
I will go on to round 18 on the 15 that are ready, then I can at least start the half hexies while I wait for the yarn to arrive.

Half motifs are done as far as I could get them without more Snow. My order shipped yesterday but half of it is coming from the UK so will take a while longer. Fortunately, the Snow is in the package that is coming from the US warehouse.

The first package from LoveCrochet arrived yesterday and I was able to finish the hexagons. Today (Sunday), I finished the half motifs.

I blocked all the motifs today. I didn’t need to pin them out, I just soaked them in wool wash in tepid water for 15 minutes then dried them by rolling in a towel (and standing on it). I just flattened them out on the blocking mats and put them out on my deck in the sun.
I used the few feet of Fawn yarn I had left to try out the join. It’s going to work out great with a 3.75mm hook. I can’t wait until the second package comes with the rest of the yarn so I can join these up!
