Colors (pattern vs. my yarn):
A - 4 balls - Buff - Cream
B - 1 ball - Mink - Charcoal
C - 1 ball - Taupe - Smore
D - 1 ball - Nutmeg - Full Moon
E - 1 ball - Spruce - Gulf Side
F - 1 ball - Dark Oak - Rain Forest
I finished the first test/gauge square and it is 6” (instead of 5.75”) with the recommended 4.5mm hook. I like the drape of the square, so rather than going down a hook size, I will adjust the side panels as needed to get my front and back to the width that I like based on a sweater I own that I think has a similar amount of ease as I want for this one.
Now that I know the pattern, I will switch to assembly line for the remaining 23 squares.

I’ve got all the squares made now. I have been using this as my Wearable Wednesday project, so I have been working on them slowly over the weeks. I’m not sure how I like this daily rotation idea in practice, but I do like the variety and the way it keeps the number of WIPs manageable.

This project has just been sitting and I haven’t been motivated to pick it up and join it into a sweater. I’ve been thinking about why that is and the likelihood (or lack thereof) that I’ll actually wear the finished garment. I don’t wear any of my crocheted sweaters. So, I’ve decided to change course and just join these into a small, 4 x 6 square throw.
My squares are about 6”, so without any join or border, that would be 24” wide and 36” tall which is much too small. I don’t really feel like making more squares, so I’ll just count on the join to add some inches and add a border as wide as I feel is necessary.
Also, to not have as many partial skeins, I’ll use different colors for the join of each square, which means I won’t be able to use the continuous JAYG like Jane does for her pattern, but I think it will still look cute.

It was a brain teaser to determine what color square border to use for every square to not have it match the last non-cream round and not match any of its neighbors. I had to introduce a sixth color for the joining round, so I went with Sequoia, a nice, rich brown. Now my colors are a light and dark of teal, gray, and brown besides the neutral. I will use the Sequoia in the blanket border too, in addition to the cream, to tie it all together.
It’s Sunday and, in spite of spending much more time than I anticipated making the layout chart, I’ve managed to add the square border including doing JAYG for half the squares. I couldn’t use the join from the pattern but I used a similar one that is a “pull loop through “ method that makes a nice braid effect and is still lacey.
