I’m going to make up all 50 squares in The Granny Squares Flowers Card Deck using my bright DK stash. Then I’ll make up plain squares in a neutral color to do a checkerboard but I’m going to put them on point and put triangles on the sides to square it off.
I’ve made the first three and they were fun! I’ve also got The Granny Square Card Deck not Flowers version that arrived today in the mail. One idea is to do the neutral squares as the non-Flowers in all one color. Sadly, I don’t think I have enough of white or cream in any one brand. Would it look bad to have multiple shades of white/cream, kind of like what I did for the centers of the Flower Bed Blanket? The only neutrals I’m sure I have enough of are black and slate blue.

I have made up 3 of the squares from the non-Flower card deck and they averaged 5 1/3 g. So, I could get around 18 per 100g skein. I chose the one that I thought would take the least yarn (regular granny) one that would take an average amount of yarn (solid granny) and one that would take the most yarn (popcorns).
If I were to do a 7 x 7 grid on the diagonal, I would need:
- 49 Colorful Flower Squares
- 36 Single Color Regular Granny Squares
- 24 Single Color Half Grannies (equivalent of 12 full)
- 4 Single Color Quarter Grannies (equivalent of 1 full)
So 49 of both which makes sense. I have 3 skeins of White in the Brava Sport. So that would make 18 x 3 = 54 squares, so I should have enough! I can use the Stylecraft Special DK White to join them all and do the border, or even a cream or other neutral.
Possible join so the square tips touch: How To: Crochet Slip Stitch Seam

I made 8 more of the non-flower grannies in White on the family trip to New York City this last weekend. Most were made in the car/train going to and from, but a few were made sitting at a table in Rockefeller Center since it was Knit/Crochet in Public day on Saturday.
