Notes

READ THIS BEFORE YOU START THIS PATTERN: If you are having trouble with the even-numbered rows, please see the video by the tech editor, Lauren, that was posted to the CAL Google Group.

The CAL starts September 1. I have 17 skeins of this yarn. I can’t imagine that’s not enough for a throw, even though the preview yarn requirements say almost 4,000 yards. Hard to believe it would really require that much. I have a few skeins of white as well and I can add to the border if I don’t think it’s big enough.

I got started this morning (on the drive up to move K into her new apartment in NH) and have finished one skein of yarn. The pattern was written in a rather confusing way for the first row of “cables”, but after I figured it out it is very simple. (Clever way to make a cable look.) Good Netflix project.

I think I’m on row 20 -- I’ve got 9 twists to my cable.

This is going to be a wide throw. If I had it to do again, I’d remove a couple of repeats. I put a marker where I attached the second skein of yarn, and I got roughly 4.5”.

There are 181 rows in the (worsted) blanket, so 36 rows per week to finish in 5 weeks plus a week for the border. That’s only 5 or 6 rows a day, which should be doable and leave enough time left over for projects that are less boring.

11” after 3 skeins, row 31.

55” wide.

September 7, 2019

15.5” after 4 skeins, row 41. At about 10 rows per skein I’m not going to quite make it to 180 rows as per pattern but it will be close enough. If I want to do all the rows, I will definitely be using the white for the border and I’ll probably do that only on the ends to avoid making it too wide.

September 9, 2019

19.5” after 5 skeins, row 53, so this means it’s going to be approximately 62.5” long after 16 skeins, leaving 1 skein to do a perimeter round.

It turns out I have 4 skeins of white, so my plan is to only do the border on the short sides, which will add about 8” per side, so it should end up about 55” x 78”, which might be too big.

So, in total if I use all 21 skeins, I’ll be 1/3 done when I’ve finished my 7th skein.

September 13, 2019

27” after 7 skeins, row 72. I’ve added the 1/3 done picture to the Google Group for the CAL.

September 15, 2019

Row 89. 8.5 skeins.

September 22, 2019

Row 123. 12 skeins. 45”.

They finally added a video tutorial! I’m so happy they did that since so many people were having trouble. (But I feel bad for those who got so far along and will discover they were doing it wrong.)

September 26, 2019

I finished row 158 this morning which I continued around as a full round of sc to be the base of the border. I have 1 3/4 skeins of the Ecru left which I’ll add to either end with the ribbed edging pattern, roughly following the pattern.

I’ve decided not to add the white because I think it will look better in a single color and it is already massive/heavy.

September 27, 2019

I added the borders to the ends last night and some reverse sc down the sides this morning, so now it is completely done! If I had it to do again, I would not follow the pattern for the border and just done an alternating dc/fpdc rib, or done an extended fpdc -- the edges are curling a bit because of the dc into the stitch below the row of sc. I’m not going to block it, though, I’m just going to throw it into the wash and call it complete.

I ended up using all but 21g of the Mary Maxim yarn, so this project was a stashbusting win!
