I’m making this blanket to use up my Aran acrylic scraps.
I auditioned several patterns: V Stitch (too open), Cluster V Stitch (bowing), Moss Stitch (too slow), Snuggle Stitch (too thick/slow). I finally settled on this stitch pattern because it blends the colors slightly better than just double crochets. I randomly started with 140 stitches, which is giving me 51”, and that’s pretty close to the 50” x 60” standard throw size. (The pattern, as the name implies, has the rows running vertically, so starts with a much longer starting chain, but I prefer horizontal.)
I’m only 8 rows in but I’m pretty happy with how it is coming so far. I probably should have used a 6.0mm or 6.5mm hook to make it softer, but it’s not bad enough that I feel the need to start over.
Recipe for this blanket:
- Roughly one row per color.
- Try to alternate light or bright and dark.
- Magic knot at ends of rows (simple border will hide the color blips and knots). (Use the technique I learned from making Attic 24 stripey blankets.)
- If a color runs out before the end of the row (like the red did), finish the row with a very similar color or just switch to the next color early.
It takes 9g or 10g per row.

I’m doing 27 rows, then 2 of black.

A local doctor recently posted in our neighborhood messages (Nextdoor app) that she’s looking for small blankets for her hospital’s patients. It’s a hospital that focuses on underserved populations.
This pattern was actually designed with the stripes being vertical, and if I stopped now it would be a great lap blanket size with vertical stripes. I think I’ll do that and start a new one with the remaining scraps.
Time for two rounds of black dc for the border.
Border added! Tomorrow I’ll go through my pile of blankets that I’ve made since the last time I donated and decide which to keep for future gifts and which to send to the hospital. I’ll be happy to have this go to someone who needs a hug.

I dropped this off at Island Yarn today where Vicki is collecting blankets for the hospital. I brought three others as well. So convenient that Vicki has volunteered to collect these for us.
I just counted and this is my 65th completed blanket since I started crocheting in 2016. 17 donated, 25 gifted, 2 were commissions, 8 are in the future gift stash, which means there are 13 in the house somewhere? That seems crazy! (And that’s not counting the unfinished ones.
