”If I could begin to be, half of what you think of me, I could do about anything, I could even learn how to love” - Love Like You (End Credits), Rebecca Sugar

In the past month I’ve really gotten into Steven Universe. I love how it’s a show that is projected to a young audience, yet is something any cartoon lover can watch. It deals with hard hitting issues and topics and helps credit a narrative that can lead to discussions. I love the LGBTQIA+ representation within the show (with basically every gem, but especially Garnet and Pearl). As someone who identifies as gay/queer, it’s nice to see that kids will grow up with a show I wish I would’ve had when I was a kid.

Now, although Steven might not be my favourite character, he is my favourite half-human half-gem (I mean, he’s just so damn cute) and I love his sweater! It was first featured in the episode Maximum Capacity, and made its return in Gem Harvest. I thought I’d give this a try, as the first sweater I hope to complete! I hope to do more Steven Universe related pieces in the future (I already have some cosplays lined up, mainly Pearl’s main outfit from halfway through season 1-present, and her outfit from Mr.Greg), but this is a start!

All photos belong to Rebecca Sugar and Cartoon Network. From the episode “Gem Harvest”

MAKE SURE TO READ THIS BEFORE YOU START TO DO THIS PATTERN
I changed a lot about this pattern… like almost every section I changed something. Things weren’t done right, or didn’t work out. I had a lot of problems with this pattern, and adjusted accordingly. I will probably end up writing a pattern for this sweater since my Mom and I practically already have. Just as a heads up I have listed all of my changes below and I highly suggest you follow (if not consider) them before you start knitting.

Butterscotch Yarn

  • As a heads up, since this colour of yarn is of a lesser weight, I will be doubling it. I will put down that I used a skein, but I am taking 2 balls and doubling the yarn that way.

Needle Changes & Casting On

  • Since I tend to knit tightly, I upped my size to a 9.00mm

  • I would also like to note that for each of the cast ons, cast on one more so you can join it in the round.

Pattern Changes

  • I’m doing a small, and the pattern says to CO 114 stitches. You will want to cast on 2 extra (116) since the number needs to be divisable by 4 in order to work with the rest of the ribbing.
  • You will end up with 154 stitches (once you do the increase row). To make this fit with the pattern again you need to do a k2tog for the first of your 3 stitches, then after you are done the fourth star, do another k2tog while you do your K4. This will put you back on track with the pattern.
  • I will also add that before you start knitting the stars, do a Knit row. This will save you from having to deal with increases while you are trying to do the star chart. This is not stated in the pattern, but I highly recommend doing this!
  • I also carried along my yellow yarn. I would carry it every third or fourth stitch, depending on the row in the chart.

Sleeves

  • In the pattern, it states ”K2, inc 1, work until last 2 sts, inc 1, k2”. I interpreted the work to mean keep on doing k2, inc 1 all around. THIS IS WRONG!!!
  • What the pattern means to say is K2, inc 1, knit until last 2 sts, inc 1, k2”

PLEASE DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID!
You will end up with a balloon for a sleeve. I got about 7.5 inches out of 13.5 inches doing this when I was corrected.

  • THE SLEEVE PATTERN DOES NOT WORK After you follow the pattern till it is it’s designated length (mine was 13.5 inches), it says to do the star chart 4 times. This will not work. I was on gauge and there aren’t enough stitches to do the pattern 4 times. You would have needed 68 stiches to make this work for size Small. I ended up having 48 stitches when I started the star pattern row. I have modified it so I will only have 2 stars on each sleeve. This means you will have to reverse the pattern for the next sleeve in order for the sleeves to line up and look the same.

Fixing the Sleeve Pattern

Here is how I fixed the pattern, so it contains 2 stars that are evenly spaced:

(From pattern and my add ons)
Row 1: K3, inc 1 until end of row
Row 1A: K across row
Row 2: k8 (blue), row 1 star + k1 (blue), row 1 star + k1 (blue), k8 (blue)
Continue this until Row 8 in chart (row 9 all together)
Row 8 Chart: k2 (b), inc 1, k6 (b), ^^row 8 chart + k1 (b)^^, do everything in ^^ one more time, k6 (b), inc 1, k2 (b)
Row 9 Chart: k9 (b), ^^row 9 chart + k1 (b)^^, do everything in ^^ one more time, k9 (b)
Continue with Row 9 Chart until the end of the star chart.
Next Row: K2, k2tog until the end of row

Note: If you use this pattern for your sleeves you will not have to reverse the pattern. This will ensure that both sleeves turn out the same, unlike his pattern.

Fixing the Yoke

Listed below is how I did the Yoke. It is a combination of my own design and the original pattern. The row repeats will for sure work for size S, I do not know about the other sizes!

Place last 3 sts and first 3 sts of the body on a holder. Inbetween the 4th and 5th stars, put the center 6 blue sts on a holder. Put the last 3 sts of the sleeve and the first 3 sts of the sleeve on a holder. Repeat for next sleeve.

Row 1: K remaining sts onto 30” Size 11 circular needles starting from left sleeve, then the back, right sleeve, and front. Place markers between each of the sections.

MAKE SURE AT THE BEGINNING OF ROW 2 THE MARKER IS ON THE RIGHT NEEDLE!

Row 2: k2tog, (k until 2 before marker, ssk, sm, k2tog), repeat everything in ( ) till the end of the row. You should end with a ssk (since you already did the k2tog at the very beginning)

Repeat last 2 rows 2 (1, 20) times.
Row 1 is just k till the end of the row

Then repeat both rows 16 times.
So if we are counting on a counter:
Row 1 ON COUNTER = Row 1
Row 2 OC = Row 2
Row 3 OC = Row 1
And so on and so forth…

Then after that knit Row 2 four times.

The Neck

Knit for one row

K2, p2 until desired length. I’m going to k2, p2 until my neck is 1 inch long.

Note: You will possibly have to k2tog twice at some point. I found that I was 2 stitches short, so I needed to k2tog to get to the right amount.
