I don’t want to do swatches for sweater, right? So let’s do the ribbing from Briornate Sweater by Stephen West and the brioche from that and use this hat to get gauge with needles 5 and 6.

Using twisted 1x1 ribbing for the brim to swatch for sweater, so don’t use the 2x2 ribbing in the pattern.
cast on 88, size 6, magic loop method, alternating long tail cast on, setup row p1, k1 (knit the knits and purl the purls as you see them from how you cast on, for me, since I do a twist for the first stich, and then a standard long-tail, I end up with purl-knit-purl-knit, ending with a ‘knit’ alternating long tail cast on stitch ) , then into twisted 1x1 ribbing to swatch the ribbing portion of sweater in the hat brim.

Welp. Alternating cast on wasn’t stretchy enough. Shoot.

For 88 stitches, reducing to 66 after ribbing band of 2 inches (for my gauge swatch purposes), I am reducing by knitting 2 together (starting on a knit stitch) followed by purl 2 together. Then 2 or 4 regular rib stitches (not twisted), evenly spreading reductions. Adding 3 reductions at the end of the side A, starting with 1 reduction on side b. just get them in there, not all in one spot. it’ll be fine. it’s a hat.

setting a life line before the set up round for the brioche and switching needle sizes

Backing out rows here and there. I saw a forum post on laddering down brioche and half brioche but I’m not interested to learn. Easier to life line now and again.

I won’t learn to fix brioche! (she said, with confidence, until the mistake below the life line.

snip life line -fix it, crochet hook the life line through again, retie it. profit.

I’m fluctuating between “this is fine. This is easy,” and “aw crap. “

Made it to the decreases and instantly flubbed things learning how to decrease left and decrease right.
Back to the 5 inch life line, then redo a few lines and start decreases over. It sucks having a life line on or right near decreases so hoping this is the last time back to this life line.

Got a kids hat out of this gauge making the third size. Need to wash and get gauge and see what’s next on sweater testing.
