Each chicken I get better and learn more. The gusset has always been a struggle. I now use thinner yarn and only knit 10 straight rows with out increases or decreases. I like the gusset smaller and the chicken stands better. Also I use an intarsia ring to hold my yarns for stitching later. Less of a yarn mess.
