Collection of ideas what to experiment with on a 16 shaft table loom. Pictures are screenshots from public accessible sources.

Obviously I can increase the number of blocks, like in Double weaving, Deflected double weave, Huck lace etc.
Also twill can become even more fancy and what not…
I will definitely use a multi shaft table loom to experiment with the possibilities. But when it comes to meters of repeating complex patterns I would go for a dobby.

Variability of choices for each pick is what I’m looking for first most when thinking of multiple shaft, therefore manually driven levers perfectly fit.

Finally found my original source of inspiration for a multi shaft table loom: a CHANEL video which includes LESAGE Tweed and how it’s designed. This time made screenshots

Tool for intuitive painting with all kinds of strings/ textiles

I see the use of a multi shaft table loom as a tool to paint with yarn (all kinds, including ribbon, stripes of fabric etc.), drawing line by line, first vertically for the warp, then horizontally for the weft, being able to choose which vertical line goes over or under, with variability depending on number of shafts.

Wow (Way of working)
I imagine a creative process consisting of a combination of intuition and well planned steps, leading eventually to a pattern I would like to repeat to make a fabric.

Process steps could be:

  • Finding a theme, mood, inspiration
  • Finding fitting materials and colours
  • Virtually rawly define vertical (warp) and horizontal (weft) grid (basically materials and colours)
  • plan and calculate for the warp (which materials/colours go on which shaft, vertical pattern, which weaving structure
  • Regarding variation in elasticity or strechiness consider a separation by a second warping beam
  • Typically build the base of the warp from the least elastic threads (linen, cotton e.g.) on the first beam
  • Other (arty) yarns might be added via direct warping to the second beam, let the inspiration run wild
  • Make warps, dress the loom
  • let the intuitive fun part begin with all materials chosen for the weft: what’s next pick? Which warp threads go over or under. Thinner yarns could build the base structure, the canvas for the painting - so to say;
  • The others could build the colours, the paint. Line by line
  • Play!
  • If you are lucky you’ll find a pattern you’d love to repeat to make a fabric

What I’m looking for regarding loom design

it should be designed to be a sturdy multi shaft loom with levers instead of (direct) treadles

Good ergonomics
Stability,
long lasting materials
Being quiet
prefer texlov over metal heddles
2nd warp beam
Large shed
Reproducible warp tension
Always straight, parallel fall line
Comfortable to dress

What I’m not looking for
Foldability
Lightweight
Made and designed to be upgraded from smaller numbers of shafts ()
