This is a fun pattern, I’m not sure why. Maybe because the circlular shape and texture are very appealing, and the squares are very fast to make, and easy to memorize. I think I could make these in my sleep now. Blanket is 48 squares, set 6 x 8.
Slip stitch joining method:

I’m loving these colors, not what I usually work with. I was inspired by caseyplusthree’s blanket here.
Another inspiring blanket with granny clusters instead of single color DCs here.
Squaring rounds:
R1: I did one less round for the circles, they just looked too big to me in relation to the two squaring rounds. I ended with 3 dc, 1 fpdc and on around then the first squaring round is:
1 tr, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 6 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 tr, 3 ch, 1 tr, 1 dc, 1 hdc …the 6 sc is different than the pattern because of one less round for the circle.
R2: CH1, working in both loops SC in same stitch as join, SC in next 12 stitches, SC5 in CH3 space, SC in next 12 stitches, and around
For the border I did 1 round of sc, 1 round of hdc, then 1 round of sc with 5.5 mm hook.
I don’t like to block. Washed on gentle cycle with fabric softener, spun very dry, finished in dryer, this yarn comes out very nice & soft. The edging is curled and circles a little puffy so I will steam block over the ironng board. Not sure if this yarn needs that every time it’s washed, or if blocking holds it’s shape through washings.
For smaller corner “holes”:

Four rounds, end (3dc, 1fpdc), then starting in any fpdc stitch: (2 htrc, ch 2, 2 htrc), dc, hdc, 7 sc, hdc, dc, (2 htrc, ch 2, 2 htrc), dc, hdc, 7 sc…around.
Alternate corners:
Details of mod: Round 6 is ch 4 (counts as first tr), working in back loops only, tr in same stitch, --dc in next st, hdc, sc in 9 stitches, hdc, dc, 2 tr in same stitch, chain 2 (for corner) 2 tr in next stitch, repeat from --. I hope this is clear…you’ll have 17 stitches per side.
Round 7: ch1 and sc around as per pattern but only do 3 sc in each corner.
