The pattern calls for 700 yds of the dark color, but I have only 660. I feel like I’d be ok if I tightened up the gauge, but there is no gauge stated on the pattern, so I don’t know what I’m shooting for. I asked the question on the comments page for the pattern, but received no response. I guess I could adjust the stitch count in multiples of 4 to make it shorter. That would use less yarn, but I’m not really sure how much shorter I should go. Since I have plenty of the lighter color (924 yds), I think maybe I’ll just switch them up, starting with the dark color instead of the light, and ending with the light.
I stopped after row 68, one row short of the end, because I didn’t have enough yarn left for that last row without breaking into a full skein, which didn’t seem worthwhile. I weighed that it took 7 grams to do row 67, and I had only 5 grams left. I would have done the last row with the darker color instead, but I didn’t have enough left for that either. I used what I had left of that to do a sc edge along the bottom, in order to disguise where I had carried the color changes.
Note: According to the diagram, the edge 1 stitch counts include the 1st marked stitch and the edge 2 counts do not (edge 1 is the beginning edge of row 1 and all odd rows). This is true for the panel stitch counts as well, so when double checking stitch counts, it helps to remember that the stitch counts for all odd rows include the ending (and not the beginning) marked stitches of each section, and the stitch counts for all even rows include the beginning (and not the ending) marked stitches of each section.
I used this same yarn for my previous project (Lighten Up!), which was knit lace, and it was very soft & flowy. But these single crochets make it feel very dense & rough, and not particularly squishy. It was actually kind of hurting the middle finger on my left hand to work on it after a while. If it went on for much longer, I’m sure I would have developed a thick callous there. It’s still a little sore, and I finished this over a week ago. I don’t recommend this yarn for a fully single crochet project like this.
The yarn also transferred die to my fingers and my crochet hook! I didn’t block it for this reason, because I was afraid that it would bleed. My Lighten Up shawl was also striped like this, and I didn’t seem to have the same problem, so I don’t know. Maybe it’s just the Captain color that I used here (that one was Navy). In any case, it doesn’t seem to particularly need blocking. The tails do curl quite a bit, and the sc edging tends to curl in a bit as well. These things could probably benefit from a block, but I’m not willing to risk the bleed at this point. Maybe later after I’ve gotten to wear it a bit. I’ll have to be careful to wear something dark underneath it though, as the dye may rub off onto my clothes!
Approximate Measurements:
Width, at fullest point, across the flat edge: 10” (12” along the diagonal of the tip).
Length of tails from the last corner, along the outside edge: 41”.
Note: Although my begin and end dates make this appear to have taken 2 months to complete, it really didn’t. I was working on this at the time when I was installing new floors & painting my house, which is almost like moving, so there were days on end that I didn’t do a stitch!
