I designed this cable cardigan with stitch pattern inspiration from Alice Starmore’s Aran Knitting, New & Expanded Edition
Knitted bottom-up in an almost seamless construction: Body is knitted back and forth simultaneously over fronts and back (with faux seams at the sides), then split for the armholes. The sleeves are knitted in the round until the armholes.
The only “real” seems attach the sleeves to the body. All other joins are knitted or grafted together, including the neckline and the saddle shoulders. Only reason that I did not join body and sleeves for knitting the yoke was that I was unsure of the fit of the sleeve caps and did not want to risk frogging ve-e-ery long rows…I plan to make a totally seamless construction for version 2.
Details:
- The braids on all edgings (body, sleeves, neckline) are knitted “across”. On body and sleeves stitches are picked up from the side of the edging.
- The braid on the neckline is shaped by short rows that hide in the cable crossings.
A note on the yarn DROPS Merino Extra Fine: It has a lustrous glow and is made of eight twisted strands, which makes it almost as airy as a blow yarn. On washing my swatch, it grew considerably at the expense of loosing some of the very distinct texture the stitches had before washing.
