Notes

Colors gray, white & tan/light brown, large regular color runs. Fiber is very soft, fine. Labelled as roving but when predrafted acts like top.

Started May 18. Making two skeins. Fractal Spinning.
Split braid in half lengthwise. Set aside first half. Second half split into 3 pieces 50/25/25. Spinning semi-woolen (long draw from faux rolags or hand carded rolags) on turnip support spindle, hoping will get a light, soft 3ply yarn.

5/25: First 25/25 pieces are spun, 50 started. Must watch that I’m putting enough twist in otherwise it falls apart when winding off spindle. Not a problem with drop spindle, but with support spindle its very easy to forget to check. Also surprising how much that little spindle will hold in cop.

5/27: ok, this is what happens when I think I know what I’m doing without actually checking. So I’m spinning away on the 50% section and I notice I’m like halfway thru and my cop is about the same size as the two previousely spun 25% sections. Duh moment! The 50% section is twice as big so it will be twice as long. So I’m not making 3ply with this technique, I’m making a 2ply. Sometimes I wonder how I got out of kindergarten.

5/28: Finished spinning; started plying. Not sure I’m liking this fractal color blending. Maybe I’ve just gotten too used to Navajo plying’s stronger coloration. Will give my little sample skein a bath then see how I like it. I may do the second half of this bump as a regular 2ply. I must think about this.

6/1: finished plying the first fractal skein. I like it better now than I did in the beginning, however, I think I’m going to make it 2/3 fractal spun 1/3 traditional 2ply. That way I can alternate the two 2ply types in my final project. Variety is good.

3 skeins, 255yds, so far: 1-66yds; 2-99yds; 3-90yds (510 yds Singles)

8/7: let’s finish this up! Commence spinning second half bump singles. I split this into four sections and this will be a traditional 2ply (as opposed to fractal).

8/14: finished the first 2ply skein from the second half bump

8/15: started spinning for second 2ply skein.

8/16: finished spinning. 2ply plying bobbin prepped.
8/18: plying finished.
All done!
