Notes

Cotton
cotton sliver from The Spinning Loft S/F 7/1-
Turnip support spindle, then top whorl drop spindle. Prefer drop spindle. Easy if I can keep the spin speed up. Thigh rolls help especially as the cop gets bigger.
7/11 two bobbins worth done.

Llama cloud
2.5 ounces llama cloud. Short staple (1”) Spinning longdraw on drop spindle S/F 7/8-10. Plied 7/11 on Jack.

Alpaca/Silk blend
7/12 started spinning this today on Jack. Took a little piece and tried Short Forward Draw from the end and from the fold, as well as an 6+ inch backward draw from the end and fold, and Point of Twist from the end and fold. Settled plain ole SFD from end, although I occasionally degenerate into backward or PoT.
This is spinning easily enough. Took a little bit to get used to the longer staple length after the cotton and llama.
I’d split this first braid in half lengthwise already as I’d planned a 2ply, but I changed my mind. The 2ply would give my barber polling in spots which I just couldn’t see with this yarn so I’m going to Navajo ply it.
7/13: Spun this afternoon and tonight and am halfway thru first braid.
7/14: started second half. This is turning into auto-pilot spinning.
7/15: plying. Alpaca/silk done. Cotton started.

7/16: plying cotton
7/18: plying cotton

Yak/Merino blend
7/20: started spinning “New Moon” colorway today. Soft, spongey, staple length 2.5”, 50/50 blend. Spinning semi-woolen (short attenuated backward draw from the end) for a traditional 2ply.
7/21: ran into some spinning problems (detailed in blog) made spinning first half of first bump an ordeal.
7/22: finished spinning and plying the first bump early this morning (5:30). Glad it’s done!
Came out nicely in the end; very barberpole-ish but that’s ok. Now to make the second bump match.

TdF is over. Had a lot of fun looking at different fibers. Mostly liked all of them but I’m more than happy to go back to my wool breeds. There’s more than a few of them I haven’t spun yet.
