I was running out of ideas for what to knit with my stash yarn, so I asked my mom if she needed anything. At first she said no, but then she decided her sunglasses case was getting old. I was wanting to practice some colorwork, and I came up with this idea.
I started doing this all in the round. I used a provisional cast on, then after a few rounds (8, I think), I knit the next round together with the remaining live stitches from the cast on round to make a tube. Then I can easily put a drawstring in it if she’d like, and it gives it a seamless look.
When I started on the colorwork, I was reminded intarsia doesn’t really work well in the round. So right after the round where I joined with the cast on, I began working flat. I’ll join it with mattress stitch (which is magical!) later. I had a size 5 needle tip and a size 4 tip, since one of my size 5 tips broke. This didn’t matter when I was knitting in the round, but when I started knitting flat, I started to worry about it. Then I remembered that purling is
typically looser, so it may actually be to my benefit.
I don’t know that this will actually turn out well, since I have very little experience with maintaining my tension in colorwork. I imagine it’ll be iffy around the color changes. But that’s why I wanted practice--for my dream of eventually making argyle knee high socks!
Now to figure out the yarn management. I don’t want to put short pieces of yarn on bobbins because it’s cotton, so there isn’t a great way to join the yarn. Although now that I mention it, I do have some pretty large bobbins…I think I’ll try that now!
Later…
Hmm…sadly, I can’t remember when I finished this, but it was in early October. I think it turned out well, though! It’s not terribly even, but it’s decent, and I’ve already figured out what to do about part of that. I still need some practice, though.
