I modified the Bottoms Up Short Slouchy Hat by Oombawka Designs to fit my my needs.

Hat band: I used an I (5.5 mm) hook for the band instead of the recommended 4.5 mm hook as I didn’t want the band to be tight. I did not chain 1 at the end of each row.

Hat: I used the recommended I (5.5mm) hook and I crocheted the hat in sc instead of dc, so I doubled the amount of rounds. I used 72 stitches around (needed a multiple of 4 for the design to work).
Round 1: sc in main color
Round 2: starting with 2nd sc of round, every 4th sc in contrast color NOTE: when changing colors, I did not change color by pulling the contrast color through the current stitch. I completed current stitch and then changed color. Going back to main color color, I did change color by pulling through and completing current stitch. This eliminated the top part of the stitch being white so you only see the “V” part of the stitch in contrasting color.
Subsequent odd number rounds: sc in main color.
Subsequent even number rounds: Every 4th stitch will be in contrast color, but round 2 start with 2nd stitch in contrast color Round 4 start with 4th stitch in contrast color. Round 6 same as round 2, round 8 same as round 4 and so on. This will stagger the contrast color stitches.
Finishing rounds: Round 17: Decreased by crocheting 2 sc together in the two stitches between contrast stitches of previous round so that in row 18 I could place the contrast stitches in every 2 sc together and the would be centered. Round 18 was the last round I used contrast stitches. rounds 19-24 Main color only.
