I took Stephen’s Craftsy class, Shawlscapes, which greatly inspired me to try my own thing with designing and how to increase to achieve different shapes, my head is bursting with ideas now. To start with I have played a bit safe and used Metalouse as a sort of template to build upon. Yes, I have had to rip back a number of times, but I have learned a great deal and had lots of fun. My fru fru ruffle was a flight of fancy for my final edging. In the end I had 1600 stitches on my needles for the fru fru! Don’t even remind me of the elastic bind off erk!
We can’t get Noro Shiraito here in the UK :0(

Rusty Autumn colours do nothing for my colouring. I’m a pink, blue, purple and red sort of gal, so I have run amok with a garish mix that should blow the head of anyone too tame. Put your shades on now and stand back!

At the end of section one I did not have 221 stitches…..wine and knitting are never happy bedfellows! So I kept knitting to ensure I ended with the last 2 rows being a row 1 followed by a row 2, by which point I had 231 stitches, 10 too many, so I just made sure I continually had a spare 5 stitches each side of the centre decrease area of the shawl when I got to the slipped stitches.
This has worked for me as I did not want the 2 central bars of slip stitches close to each side of the very centre, but preferred to look of a gap each side before slip stitches commenced. I have managed to achieve this without even trying!
Section 2, row 11, I found the yarn over would not sit nicely next to the slipped stitches, so did a backward loop increase at the beginning and end of this row to hold the yarn over in place and stop it puckering the 3 slipped stitches & again on row 11 when you repeat rows 1 -14.
Am holding the bright pink contrast colour wool as 2 strands together for the slip stitch section, but a single strand on the fru fru ruffle. This pink wool is over 30 years old and has been in my stash all that time since my children were babies, it was the perfect pink shade for this project, clearly this is kismet.

All finished yesterday. It is washed and now drying, still a bit damp in these pics. Hope to add some pics of Flight of Fancy being worn once it is truly dry. It’s quite big, not surprisingly having used heavier wool and larger needles.
This has been great fun, I have loved adding my own ideas such as the little holey lace edge before putting on fru fru. Can’t wait to run amok with another design.
