Notes

I am putting one last project on this loom before I replace it with an AVL K-series loom. This is a 10-shaft shadow-weave draft of my own devising.

June 30: Ay Caramba! I put the wrong reed on the loom and wove the shawl at 20 epi/ppi. It’s a bit stiff, but may loosen up with wet finishing. Nevertheless, I’m going to re-sley with the correct reed and try again.

Oct. 25: Finally got around to wet finishing this. The fabric ended up being supple and pleasant. The shadow weave lines could be sharper. I will make this again at 16epi/ppi and see.

Warp EndsCalculation
    Finished width   20.00”
+ Shrinkage (2.00%)+ 0.40”
+ Take-up (10.00%)+ 2.04”
= Width at reed= 22.44”
× Warp Sett× 16.00 epi
= Warp ends= 359 ends
+ Adjustment for pattern+1
+ Floating selvedge+2
= Total warp ends= 362 ends
Warp LengthCalculation
    Finished length   72.00”
+ Shrinkage (2.00%)+ 1.44”
+ Take-up (10.00%)+ 7.40”
= Length to weave (relaxed)= 74.00”
= Length to weave (under tension)= 81.00”
+ Fringe+ 12.00”
= Length of item= 93.00”
× Item count× 1.00
= Length of weaving= 81.00”
+ Loom waste+ 12.00”
+ Warp length adjustment+ 15.00”
= Total warp length= 108.00”
= 3 yards 0”
= 274 cm
