Notes

20/2 silk is warp, 60/2 silk is weft, warp-faced plain weave.

Warp was wrapped all as one 400-end bundle. The design was created by dividing the warp into ten 1” sections and shifting each section 3” (modulo 10”) from its neighbor: 0”, 3”, 6”, 9”, 12” → 2”, 5”, 8”, 11” → 1”, 4”, 7”.

It turns out that 400 ends is too many ends to wrap at once. Dye did not penetrate well to the interior of the wrapped bundle, so those ends had dyed sections that were shorter and paler than the exterior ends.

I used Jacquard acid dye, 626 Navy Blue. The instructions indicate that I would need 3oz per pound of fiber, so I used a whole 0.5oz jar to dye my 40% wrapped, 4oz warp. This was way too much dye. The unwrapped warp was nearly black. It did lighten to a very deep navy blue after a 24 hour wet finish.

I made an amusing mistake in beaming the warp. I used Cay Barrett’s technique for warping front-to-back. You beam the warp with an open shed to provide even tension. But my loom is a jack loom, so the upper and lower shed have different path length. The caused the even and odd warp ends to shift progressively more and more from one end of the scarf to the other. You can see that one end of the scarf has more ikat feathering than the other. Oh well.
