Much against my own principles I cast on another pair of socks before finishing my previous pair, but: my other half mentioned that he dreams (!) of me making him a pair of handknit socks. Who would have known! Since it’s almost his birthday, I decided to make his dream come true, but I will have to race through these in order to do so. Deadline is 02/03, that gives me 3 weeks to spend all my free time on these
To make them extra special I’m using a skein of yarn I bought in Lyon on our holiday last summer.
It’s my first pair of socks for someone else (that is not a kid), so this is both scary and exciting! I hope I can make them to fit him perfectly.
PROJECT
- 72sts - 2,5mm needles
- I’m making the garter pannel a bit more narrow (12sts instead of 20sts). Besides this I’m knitting the sock entirely following the pattern.
- I’m using a thread of purple reinforcing wool for the heel. It’s a bobbin from a skein of Jawoll from Lang Yarns that I didn’t use.
-
09/02: turned the heel of the first sock.
- decreased to 70sts for the foot
-
14/02: finished sock 1! I also reinforced the toe, with a different color because I’m afraid I will run out of the purple and I want two of the same socks.
-
19/02: turned the heel of the second sock. Nearly ran out of the purple reinforcing wool, so it was a good shot to use the different color for the toes.
- Phieuw, knitting on these non stop makes me realize (again) that I am NOT a monogamous knitter! While I’m knitting on these I have visions of tons of other things I want to make, and I want to start them NOW
Anywayyyyy, the end is near!
-
22/02: looks like I made it! And even with some time left over to block them and put them in some cute wrapping paper
YARN
This yarn is very pretty, but also very splitty! It’s three seperate threads and I had to make sure that I knitted all three of them in every stitch. Not the easiest yarn to work with, but the end result is beautiful nonetheless.
Started with a full skein and - although these are some biiiig socks - have 40gr left after finishing the socks. I weighed the leftover with the socks and it turns out it was an almost 120gr skein, although it’s labeled 100gr!
02.03.2025
Gifted them today and he loves them! He had no idea these were for him while I was knitting these (even when sitting next to him, I decided to hide in plain sight and it worked
), so the surprise was fun! And now he wants socks for his birthday every year
