Mods:
Ribbed Thumb Gusset.
Longer Cuff - 60 rnds (approx. 6.75” pre-block for cuff).

Cuff:
CO 40 on US 7 using Modified Long Tail CO.
Join to work in round (Addi Turbo Lace 40” circular)
CO Round is counted as 1st round.
Change to US 5 for rest of mitt.
Do 59 more rounds of 2x2 rib. - total of 60 rounds including CO.

Thumb Gusset:
Set-Up: Put life line on last cuff round.
Thumb Gusset Rounds:
01: do as est. for 20 sts; PM, do M1-L, PM do next 2 sts from other needle and put on RN (have 23 sts on one needle & 18 on other). Cont. as est. to end
02: do as est. (Knit all increases when come to them.)
03: do as est. - 41 sts on needles.
04: (TG Rnd) do as est. for 20 sts; SM, do M1-L, k1, M1-R, SM, cont as est to end. - 43 sts on needles.
05: do as est. BEGIN 2x2 rib in gusset area; 43 sts on needles, 3 gusset sts.
06: do as est. - 43 sts. on needles, 3 gusset sts
07: (TG Rnd) 45 sts, 5 gusset sts
08: do as est. - 45 sts, 5 gusset sts
09: do as est. - 45 sts, 5 gusset sts

Do same as for 1st Mitt except:
01: do as est. for 18 sts; PM, do M1-L, PM do next 2 sts (have 21 sts on one needle & 20 on other). Cont. as est. to end - This change from 1st mitt will create mirror image.

Upper Hand:
01: Next Rnd, do as est. 57 sts, 17 Gusset sts, put these 17 gusset sts on waste yarn, CO 2 sts via backward loop to cover gap area - 42 sts.
02: Next Rnd, do as est., when come to 1 st before 1st CO st, k2tog/p2tog (depending what the sts are) these 2 sts, do same to next 2 sts; st count is now back to 40sts.
Cont. 2x2 rib until top hits 2nd knuckle. (Another 23 rnds.) - total of 25 Rnds for upper hand.

Note: Long Upper Hand will keep fingers warm, just fold down when fingers are needed for use.

Thumb:
Remove waste yarn and put 17 gusset sts on circular needles. Move first st to end of Rnd.; this readjusts beginning of rnd. Do 2x2 as est. when reach last 2 sts, k2tog/p2tog. 16 sts for Thumb. Cont. 2x2 until reach 2nd knuckle, approx. a total of 9 Rnds for thumb.

Finishing:
Close up hole at gap area of thumb gusset. Weave all ends.
Total Yarn Weight Used: approx. 20 grams per mitt
Pre-Block: 13” Length unstretched.
Blocking: via wash in baby shampoo.

June 2016:
I was stymied with shoulder issues so could not do any quality gift knitting for my aunt or sisters before arriving for home leave. Resorted to shopping in my wardrobe for appropriate gifts. My younger sister Lira lives in a very warm climate. Why would she ever need warm knitwear…for those long flights and cold evenings away from home (travel accessory). This was the best gift for her.
