Notes

Another beautiful sweater by Irina Anikeeva which I’m testing. It has saddle shoulders and a twisted stitch pattern on the body, worked top down. The body has a decorative slipped-stitch cabling pattern.

Gond Pullover test thread:
https://www.ravelry.com/discuss/irmiandesign/4364554/1-25

Size: 3 (M), 113 cm

Needles:
3.5 mm as main needle. I started with DPNs for the saddles, changed to Addi metal circulars for the upper body, and then to KnitPro wooden circulars for the cable pattern (both circulars 80 cm long).

Original pattern gauge with needle 3.5 mm/ 10 cm:
23 sts and 34 rows in stockinette.
28 sts and 38 rows in charted pattern.
21 sts and 34 rows in Seed stitch.

My gauge:
The length did grow after washing, and the weight pulls it down.
Final gauge and measurements:
Stockinette: 24 sts and 31 rows.
Pattern: 27 sts and 32 rows.
Body circumference: 104 cm.
Front length from shoulder: 63 cm
Back length from shoulder: 70 cm
Front length from armhole: 40 cm
Back length from armhole: 46 cm
Sleeve length: 46 cm

Calculations and measurement notes:

  • Seed stitch saddle width 14 sts should be about 6.66 cm blocked, though the edge sts will narrow this. (10cm ÷ 23 sts × 14 sts). The inner 8 saddle seed stitches should measure 3,8 cm. When the sides sts are picked up, the saddle should measure 5 cm (armholes 15 cm x 2 + 5 = 35 cm circumference).
  • Upper back: 50 rows worked incl. pick up row (2+48).

Yarn:

I used the information from this project instead of swatching and decided to use a 3.5 mm main needle as in pattern.

Skeins:
(1) 49 g. Used up after working upper back.
(2) 50 g. Attached at left front, used up in body chart round 6.
(3) 50 g. Used up in rnd 6 of 2 nd chart repeat.
(4) 50 g. Used up in rnd 6 of 3rd chart repeat.
(5) 50 g. Used up in stockinette section after third chart repeat.
(6) 49 g. Used up at neckband.
(7) 50 g. Used up at first sleeve, in 16. decrease rnd.
(8) 50 g. Used for end of 1st sleeve and for 2nd sleeve. Used up at 15. decrease rnd.
(9) 50 g. Used for end of 2nd sleeve. Left at the end: 37 g, used 13 g.
Used total:
49+50+50+50+50+49+50+50+13 = 411 g.

For the Tubular BO, I would have used this video:

But instead, I worked the Decrease Bind-off like this:

Short rows overview:
Left front:
RS: 1 Pick up row
WS 1 row
(14 Short rows starting on WS)
2 plain rows after short rows
8 rows with neck increases
12 plain rows total + 14 short rows

Right front:
RS: 1 Pick up row
(14 Short rows starting on WS)
3 plain rows after short rows
8 rows with neck increases
12 plain rows total + 14 short rows

Knitting time used for body chart (rnds 1-30):
30 rnds = 10 hours
1 rnd = 20 minutes

Body, rounds worked after decrease rnd: 17 rnds, then 2 purl rnds before the hem.

Back hem ribbing: 26 rows, then decrease row with P2tog tbl at the start and P2tog at the end (WS), Bind-off (RS).
Front hem ribbing: 14 rows, then decrease row with P2tog tbl at the start and P2tog at the end (WS), Bind-off (RS).

Neckband:
12 (saddle) + 40 (back neck) +
12 (saddle) + 60 (front neck)
(124 sts)
I worked 8 more sts at the front = 132 sts total.

Sleeves:
I picked up 8 more sts total and followed the decreases for size 5. Pick up ratio: 3 sts out of 4 rows.
My fault: Unfortunately, I didn’t notice that one of the saddles was joined with the WS up, so I had to wing it at the hold stitches edges to get it right. The difference between the shoulders will be visible (the purl stitch is missing at the edges on the right shoulder), but truly not too much when worn.

Survey notes:

My gauge:
The length did grow after washing, and the weight pulls it down. Therefore tighter stitch gauge and looser row gauge.

My final measurements for size 3 (113 cm body width in original pattern), washed:
Stockinette: 24 sts and 31 rows.
Pattern: 27 sts and 32 rows.
Body circumference: 104 cm.
Front length from shoulder: 63 cm
Back length from shoulder: 70 cm
Front length from armhole: 40 cm
Back length from armhole: 46 cm
Sleeve length: 46 cm
