Notes

Preview knitting for Crystal Hiatt. There were some adjustments made during the testing process, which made the top fit nicely at the end. It will be a great summer top for warm days.

The V-neck and armholes turned out bigger than pattern measurements shown in the schematic of the test version (though my gauge was tighter than the original). This was adjusted by working an additional garter edge.
I alternated skeins, for the flat worked parts alternating every second row, and when working in rounds, I used the helix method described in pattern which was easy to follow.

Swatch with Permin Selma, washed and dry with needle 3.0 mm:
25 sts/ 36 rows
See also my body gauge (washed) below, which came out slightly tighter.

Needles:

  • I decided to stick with needle size 3.0 mm, since I’m between two sizes and size 6 actually would be a bit too big for me.
  • For the lace section, I changed to 3.25 mm. Bound off of lace section with needle 3.5 mm.
  • Additional armhole and neck edges worked with needle 2.5 mm. Armholes bound off with a 3.0 mm needle, and neck bound off with needle 2.5 mm.

Skeins used:
(1) 52 g, used from start. Used up 15 cm from armhole.
(2) 52 g. Used up 15 cm from armhole.
(3) 51 g, used for first armhole, then for lower body. 15 g left before additional armhole edge, 14 g left afterwards (at the end).
(4) 52 g, used for second armhole and neck, then for lower body. 18 g left before additional armhole/ neck edge, 8 g left afterwards. 4 g left after working a crochet slip stitch edge (4 g used for this step).

Yarn amount used total: 52+52+37+44 + 4 = 189 g. 3.78 skeins = 793.8 meters (868.3 yards), 189 grams.

Check measurements (after added edgings): pattern says:
V-neck depth: 18 cm (mine is 19 cm)
Armhole depth: 23 cm

My measurements after washing and blocking, after added edgings, dry, and gauge:

  • V-neck depth: 24 cm (adjusted to 19 cm by additional garter and slip stitch edge)
  • Armhole depth: 27 cm (adjusted to 23 cm by additional garter and slip stitch edge)
  • Body length from underarm 37 cm incl edge
  • Body gauge washed/blocked, dry: 26 sts and 37 rows
  • Bust circumference 96 cm
  • Total top length 60 cm

Pickup stitch comments for the sleeve edges:
Size 6: The front was longer than the back. I picked up sts at a ratio 3:4 as described and got the correct total stitch count. But, since the front seems to have more rows than the back, I got these stitch counts:
2 sts under armhole
71 back sts
87 front sts
Total 158 as in pattern.
It’s the same for both armholes, I worked them simultanousely.

Project notes:

Size 6 (106.5 cm)
Pattern suggests 1-2”/ 2.5-5 cm positive ease; I got 0 cm negative ease because my stitch gauge was tighter.

No bust darts: I did not work any bust darts.

Body was worked 1 cm longer (= 21 cm) before the lace section.

I picked up sts again after the first Bind-off was done, then worked 4 garter rnds around armholes and neck.
At the end, I added a crochet slip stitch edge from WS, worked in WS garter stitch loops, using a 2.5 mm hook.

Modifications considered:

I considered adding a crochet edge, but did not use it. Here is the link though:

Pattern notes by the designer:

Meterage needed:
748 m for size 6.
(Yardage noted includes a 10% buffer for swatching and other modifications.)

SUGGESTED NEEDLES
US 3/3.25 mm, 16”/40 cm circular needle and 32”/80 cm circular needles

PATTERN GAUGE
24 sts x 35 rnds = 4”/10 cm, in stockinette stitch in the round and flat, blocked

TIME FRAME
By the deadline date your tank should be blocked, modeled photos taken and survey completed.
Start Date: March 15, 2025
Deadline Date: July 8, 2025

SURVEY
When completed, please provide your input/feedback for the questions below and also attached your finished and modeled photos. Thank you!

• What yarn did you use? Selma by Permin (fingering)
• Did you meet pattern gauge? My stitch gauge is tighter, while my row gauge is almost the same as in pattern. My gauge is 27 sts and 35.5 rows. And on what size needles? 3 mm for the stockinette, 3.25 mm for the lace part.
• What was total yardage used? 3.78 skeins = 793.8 meters (868.3 yards), 189 grams.
• Which size did you knit? Size 6.
• I like to include with garments fit information for ease, if you are comfortable, would you please share the total ease or your actual bust circumference for fit notes. 0 cm ease.
• Did you make any modifications to the pattern? Only edge adjustments, I followed additional instructions from test video for edgings. At the end, I added a crochet slip stitch edge from WS, worked in WS garter stitch loops.
• If you made modifications, were these based on styling or fit? If fit, which adjustments did you make? Edging: as written above.
• How difficult would you rate this pattern (1 = easy/beginner; 5 = intermediate/moderate; 10 = difficult/expert)? 3
• How would you rate the clarity of the pattern? 10
• Were there parts of the pattern that were confusing? No.
• Please list your finished dimensions after blocking. (Bust circumference 96 cm, length from underarm 37 cm incl edge, total length 60 cm, armhole length from shoulder edge 23 cm)
• For blocking, did you steam block or wet block? How was your fit after? I washed and laid it flat to dry, without pinning. Fits me well, with no ease.
• Do you have any other comments to improve the pattern/instructions? As I mentioned in the test channel, the upper front is longer than the back and has probably more rows. So, the shoulder join is placed about 1 inch down the back shoulders. I don’t think this was intended, and I would recommand to check the row calculations for the upper front.
• Did you enjoy the project/design? Yes, I did. I’m happy with my finished top and the final fit after adjusting the armholes and neck edgings.
