Attempt 2
Used size 8 needles.
Held the yarn double.
Did the smallest pattern size available of 66 stitches to account for the change to a bulky yarn weight.
Using the height of the adult sizes
Cast on May 14, 22
Bind Off May 19, 22
Also
Opted for a tubular cast on gotta love the invisible edge at the end of the ribbing.
Stats
Ribbing
1 set up “row”
9 rows
~1.5 inches
Body height prior to decrease
~7.5 inches
34 rows of st st
Total length ~9.5 inches….
(Wait a second… This means Rox R was right about 9.5 inches measurement. And I messed something up on the original)

Notes from Attempt 1
Cast On April 14, 22
(Rip out May 14, 22)
Doing Size Large 96 stitches.
Got stitch gauge for stockingnette at 18 stitches in 4”.
Used size 7 needles.
Row gauge was short.
Did not get garter stitch gauge. It was supposed to be 14 stitches in 4”
but it matches the st st gauge of 18 stitches in 4” exactly.
Lesson - Garter definitely shrinks vertically shorter than stockinette, but horizontally, its exactly the same.
Measured my head circumference = 23”
Crown earlobe to earlobe = 18.5”. So hat heights should be a minimum 9.25” for me.
Learned about these measurements from Roxanne Richardson’s video on Improving a hat.***
Used Knitversity’s video for in visible join in the round.
4/15 = 9 rows ribbing
9 rows rib = 1.5” including the row on the needles.
Measured my knitting on the stockinette side as per pattern instructions to 9.5” for the slouch version…. Not sure about this decision…
May 14th I ripped it out.
Using the 9.5 guideline from Rox Richardson wasn’t quite right in this scenario.
Somehow it wasn’t “slouchy” it was just loose and ill fitting.
Seems like my head needs 2 things from this hat to look better on me in this pattern…
- My noggin needs a beanie not a slouch
- Thicker fabric IOW thicker weight yarn - the worsted weight did not grab hold to my head.
So…
My Fix?

Decided to try washing and blocking.
Still drying. Results tbd.
Yarn looks a little nicer.
The body stretched vertically with balloon so switched to flat on mat… We’ll see….

Looks good.
Managed to squush it back into place… mostly.
