Notes

I wanted the shawl to be larger than the directions but not any larger than it grew, so I didn’t bother with trying to end the first section of lace at any specific row, I just made sure I had the proper stitch count to begin the second section, which I think looks just fine. No need to make sure to end at a specific row if you’re changing the size.

This is the classic tale of the transformation of an ugly thrift-store sweater made out of interesting yarn. It was ivory/undyed cotton with sparkling polyester threads, which I doubled to get a yarn that knit up as a heavy sport/DK weight, and which flew quickly on size US 7 needles. I don’t like nupping, so I used 4/0 clear AB seed beads which was a tight fit, as I use the crochet-hook method to place them.

I gave it as a gift before taking a proper photo of it, so I just have it as it appeared on the pins.

There was enough yarn left that I’ve knit another shawl out of it, this time for me. Not bad for an investment of $3.99 at the local Goodwill. The beads cost more, I’m pretty sure. This project was my first attempt at reclaiming yarn from an old sweater. I don’t usually keep a stash due to the cost of good yarn, but after getting inspired with this, I’ve laid in a nice stock of reclaimed cashmere and reclaimed lambswool and lambswool/angora blends.
