Neck Warmer Scarf (NWS)

- Beg ch 129 for 127 stitches.
- Spacing stripes in sc, hdc, dc depending on how much yarn was available.
- Main crochet hook is the blue Boye I hook I have had forever. However, I started using the green one I have instead towards the end. I don’t know if that’s what caused the spreading out or if it was all the DC rows.
- Width varies because of stitch pattern and subtle yarn size differences.
- Using RHSS yarn for approximate quantity of yarn used based on total weight of blanket when finished.

Section #1 Rows 1-11
- Rows 1-5 SRT except R3 DC not TR.
- Rows 6-11 SRT Post Vine Stitch. Very tight pattern. Would increase hook size if done again.

Section #2 Rows 12-21
- Row 12 HDC
- Row 13-14 DC
- Rows 15 - 19 MSSB Granny Stripes. The DC is definitely looser making this section wider.
- Rows 20-21 DC

Section #3 Rows 22-35
- Row 22 HDC.
- Rows 23-24 SS Wave stitch.
- Rows 28-31 MSSB Catherine Wheel.

Section #4 Rows 36-48
- Rows 36-39 SPL Easter Eggs - s/h used smaller hook.
- Rows 40-44 SPL Bobbles - used HDC instead of DC.
- Rows 45-48 Linen Stitch.

Section #5 Rows 49-64
The Street and the Edge of the Woods
- Row 49 Linen st
- Rows 50-56 SC
- Rows 57-64 This is a five DC interlocking shell stitch from the Sunset pattern in the 1971 “Afghans by Lady Galt Vol 47.” The gray and greens were used in the first afghan I ever made and used this same pattern. This makes the yarn almost 50 years old. Is that a good thing or a bad thing…

Section #6 Rows 65-76
A Stream in the Woods
- Row 65 Another row of the shells from Sunset.
- Row 66 Working again with RS facing - Round 3 from Harry border.
- Row 67 HDC
- Row 68-73 Linen Stitch
- Row 74 Final Linen Stitch Row (SC in ea SC and for ch spaces, SC in SC from row below.
- Row 75 & 76 HDC (needed one extra row so next row would be with WS facing)

Section #7 Rows 77-85
The Shrub Forest at the Edge of the Dunes
- Row 77 SPL Under the Arches - beginning this on the WS since the cluster stitches pop to the opposite side.
- Rows 78-83 SPL Under the Arches
- Row 84 & 85 HDC

Section #8 Rows 86-102 (39” long)
The Dunes at the Edge of the Sea
- Rows 86-88 HDC
- Row 89 Crossed DC
- Rows 90-91 HDC
- Row 92 Crossed DC
- Rows 93-95 HDC
- Row 96 Crossed DC
- Row 97-98 HDC
- Row 99 Crossed DC
- Row 100-102 HDC

Section #9 Rows 103-109
The Sea
- Row 103 HDC
- Row 104-109 NWS pattern stitch

Section #10 Rows 110-120
The Sunrise
- Row 110-112 HDC
- Row 113 SS Part 3 Row 26 - Suns (see notes about calculating stitch placement)
- Row 114-117 SS Part 3 Row 27-30 - Suns
- Row 118-120 HDC

Row 113 Calculations
- Pattern repeat is NOT 12 stitches neat. It is 12 stitches plus 7.
- Divide total number of stitches by 12. My stitch count is 127. So 127 / 12 = 10. This is the number of suns you will have.
- Multiply number of suns (10) by the 5 stitches it takes to make one. So 10 * 5 = 50.
- Subtract sun stitches from total stitches. So 127 - 50 = 77.
- I need 9 spaces between the 10 suns so 9 * 7 = 63. Then 77 - 63 = 14
- Divide that number evenly for each end. In this case, 7 at the beginning and 7 at the end.

- If I was working over 119 stitches, the math would be
119 / 12 = 9.92 so 9 suns.
9 * 5 = 45
119 - 45 = 74.
8 spaces at 7 st each = 56 stitches
74 - 56 = 18. So you have 9 stitches at each end.
Or alternately, make 10 suns. So 119 - 50 = 69. Spaces are 9 * 7 = 63 again. Then 69 - 63 = 6 stitches for 3 stitches on each end.

Options for border
- These don’t require the ends to be woven in:
Rosina Plane’s Envelope Border of SC. Use same hook or one size smaller.
Tinna T’s double crochet border starts with slip stitch
Heather Noble’s Front Post DC border
- But I decided to not do any of these because I felt the thickness of this type of border would be inappropriate for this afghan.
- All ends worked in completed 20240101
- Building up low spots in border (Mar and May 2024)
- 20240520: Used 45g black for border.

Conclusion: Don’t do mixed stitch blankets. Even with the same hook and the “same” yarn, I have too many difficulties getting a straight edge.
