I have always been fascinated by the black and white tile design in the main entrance hall atrium of the Europa Building but attempts at making the pattern with alternating colors were a real pain! Then I saw a project done with self-striping yarn using corner to corner and I was sold. That project did not reference a pattern but I found out later that there is a pattern named “Stained Glass” for this construction. I had already started on my own with only 14 blocks max before I saw it and wish that I had seen it first as it maxes out at 15 stitches which would have been just the right size and used almost all of each skein.

Swatching. Yarn is a little thinner than the solid colors so decided to use my blue Boye I hook instead of the J hook.

First 12” square complete. Required increase up to 14 blocks. Weighs 63g. Should be able to get two squares from each skein. Yarn ordered. Project on hold until it arrives. 4/8/2022 - these are ending up at 11 1/4” not 12”.

Using Granny Stitch Join As You Go border demonstrated by crochetcabana. The instructions begin here. My modifications: No chain 1 between shells. Joining with a PLT and chain for a braided effect.

Did the first two squares with the same I hook and a thicker RHSS Black. It was too bulky. Switched to a 5.00 hook and a thinner RHSS Black and it was better.

Joining complete. Measures 49” x 78”.

Began a border with 5.00mm hook doing sc in each dc of ea cluster, with a sc2tog at the joins. Thought this would reduce the ripple on the sides but it isn’t helping.

Adapting the border from Sandra Paul’s Granny Patches for the long sides instead. Tutorial found here.

Continued yarn from long sides to do five rows of linen stitch for the short sides. Finished short sides with one row of single crochet with the 4 1/2 hook.

The package was returned to us today. Our email is unanswered. FedEX made three attempts to deliver with no success. Our friend has disappeared.

Yarn Notes
Skeins #1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11 - no problems
Skein #2 - red color blotch in middle of green section and two knots one foot apart.
Skein #7 - red color blotch in middle of green section but in the section of the skein I didn’t need.
Skein #9 - first skein that weighed in at less than the stated weight of 141g. This one weighed 137g.
Skein #12: 2 knots in the space of 42”.
