Notes

This is one of my favorite FOs ever! I named it the Swallowtail Supernatural Shawl because most of the knitting done on it occurred during my discovery and becoming addicted to the series Supernatural on Netflix.

Modifications:

  • Used a fingering weight yarn instead of lace weight.
  • Used size 5 needle instead of size 4
  • Did 2 extra repeats of the Budding Lace 2 chart. This of course changed the stitch count required for the first Lily of the Valley chart, so to correct for this, on the first row of Lily of the Valley chart 1, I did NOT do the 4 increase YOs at the beginning and end and on either side of the center stitch. This might be noticeable to someone examining the shawl closely but I don’t find it aesthetically displeasing.

Been eyeing this pattern for a long, long time and just got this yarn. Seems like a perfect combination to me.

Cruising right along. Almost to the nupps section. I have never done nupps before, so we’ll see how it goes.

Lesson learned: for nupps, work the (K1,YO,K1,YO,K1) very loosely. And I mean VERY loosely. I tend to knit with a somewhat tight tension. I ended up taking a bamboo size 1 DPN and holding it together with my Addi circular while doing the K1, YO sequence for the nupps and then slipping the DPN out after making those stitches. That made all the difference. It was a bit more time consuming and fiddly, but worth it in the end because the nupps came out fairly uniform in size.

Last stitch bound off. I just have a few ends to weave in and need to block and it’s all finished.

Can I just say that I love this yarn? It was somewhat of an impulse buy as I had never used any kind of yarn with milk fiber, and seeing that it was deeply discounted, I decided to give it a try. I would definitely purchase it again at full price. It has a lovely drape, beautiful stitch definition and holds up well to frogging. I still haven’t blocked the shawl, and I don’t think it will need much more than a gentle pin and spritz with cold water to block it. Love. it.
