I wanted to make a little extra present for my two sisters birthdays and thought a new hot water bottle with colourful cover would fit the bill.
Both my sisters have birthdays in December, so hopefully they will come in handy on cold winters nights.
When I come to the end of a ball of yarn, I make starter granny squares and sometimes I add more rows depending on how much scrap yarn I have left to use up.
I also save all of my extra granny square left-overs from blankets.
I was happy to find a few 4 round squares that I could use for these covers, so didn’t have to make them from scratch.
I used 3 flower squares for the fronts and the rest are normal granny squares.
I used the jayg method to join the squares together with a round of cream. You can find a tutorial here for jayg
To get the rounded shape for the corners I did the following:
Round 1. Starting in the space before any corner, 3 hdc cluster, in corner space, 3 sc, in next space, 3hdc.
When working the top and bottom I continued with hdc cluster. For the 2 sides, I worked dc clusters to get more width.
Round 2. Sc all around.
To join. Sl st 2 pieces together, leaving space for the spout to go through at top and a larger space at the bottom.
Here is a Youtube tutorial of how to make a Hot Water Bottle Cover. I did’nt make mine quite like this, but it is very similar and you may find it helpful.
Spout:
Sc around opening, mine was 28 sts. I worked 3 rounds of sc in a spiral and then I started to increase once at each side each round for a few rounds. Just keep putting the cover on to check it fits snuggly.
I just sewed the bottom of the cover closed as I didn’t want buttons to get in the way. The stitches can be unpicked to remove the bottle for washing quite easily
