Notes

I absolutely love the way this yarn turned out but for one problem: A third of it is sport weight and the rest is fingering weight. Spinning fail! There’s enough fingering left to produce a small something, but I despaired finding something to make out of the sport weight.

Until I remembered this pattern!

I made the cuffs shorter than indicated and for my own comfort made the loops pinkie/middle fingers/index (3 loops). Because I was worried about yarn usage I left the thumb out completely.

Result: These mitts, which left just enough of the yarn to make repairs! I’m betting at some point the finger loops will wear out.

These are extremely fast and extremely practical. I made them as part of my OMG WE DON’T HAVE $$ FOR MUCH HEAT THIS WINTER project as indoor-only mitts. They’re perfect for housework as I can leave them on for small tasks that involve running water--rinsing off a dish, for instance--without getting the mitt wet except the loops on occasion.

My mod of the pattern, no gauge given because I just tried the cuff on until I liked the fit. I have small hands, so your mileage may vary:

With sport weight yarn, CO 40 sts. I used 5 DPNs size 3, you use whatever. :) Work 20 rows in 2x2 rib. BO 20 sts, work the remaining 20 sts back and forth in garter st (K every row) for 14 ridges or until the knitting reaches the bottom of your index finger. On the right side, BO all but one st, pull the ball through.

Using a small crochet hook (size doesn’t matter that much), work back the wrong side and make a chain that fits across your pinkie finger. Slip st in the knitting about 6 sts in from the edge or whatever width your pinkie is--measure it against your hand. Do the same to make a loop that fits across your ring and middle fingers and slip st it to your knitting, then a loop that fits across your index to the opposite edge of the knitting. Do the same in reverse on the other mitt. Pull your yarn through the loop, weave in the ends.

That’s it!

These vanished after the house fire. Alas. We have heat now, though--that’s the good part. And I will probably make these again.
