6/17/12: I want to share some changes I made in doing the Mosaic section of this pattern. When I did it the first time I did not go up a needle size. It is suggested in the pattern to do this if you are new to color work which I am not so I stayed with my size 3 needles. The mosaic section came out really tight and the pattern was not as clear to me as I would have liked but initially I decided to go on. After completing a few rows of the cc pattern I realized that the mosaic section was too tight compared to the rest of the shawl. I decided to rip back and redo with larger size needles. The close up is the mosaic section done with the US4. I think it looks much nicer and the shawl has a nicer drape as a result.

I also knit the mosaic section differently. Instead of working one color at a time and slipping stitches I knit with a stranded knit technique knitting with both colors at the same time. This was so much easier for me and I recommend doing this way if you can knit with both hands. The slip stich method was confusing because the colors you slip are not always the colors that show on the chart and you knitting doesn’t mimic the chart until you get to the second color.

The stranded knitting was easy to do since it is a garder stitch color work pattern. I knit every row and only had to remember to bring the yarn in front when knitting the wrong side rows.

All in all I am so happy I re did this. I want the shawl to be perfect and now I am super happy with the results!
