The pattern is really flawed, even with the errata it is still not correct. I am very lucky that so many other ravelrs tried it before and jotted some notes down.

I used this errata on the interweave website:

When you reach 69st, continue as follows:

• Work WS row as described (69st)
• Work the Dec Row (RS) as described. DO NOT remove markers. Since you only decrease 8st in this row you have now (61st)
• Work WS row as described (61st)

To get to 53st, you have to decrease another 8st. Since there are not enough stitches in the center to simply repeat the previous 8st-dec-row, I changed the pattern a bit.

THIS IS THE AMENDMENT I MADE TO GET 53st:
- (RS) Work in seed st to first m, sl m, knit to 1 st before next m, s2kp, k2tog, k to 2st before next m, ssk, k 3st and remove all 3 markers, k2tog, k to 1st before next m, s2kp, ssk, k to last m, sl m, work in seed stitch to end (53st)
