I love the end look, but I found the square construction extremely difficult. No idea why. I used the pattern as a guide and made the circles using Circle Granny Square (above) instead. I made my own chart, using a black spike stitch every 9th stitch. It took some math, but it turned out. If I ever make this again, I’ll tweak it more.
