From time to time I find myself in need of a new hat. But this time it wasn’t only me, there were two of us, hatless))
I had this chunky yarn in my stash for quite a while and the pattern caught my eye some time ago, but only when I saw this project www.ravelry.com/projects/Fruisaksen/bulky-hat-2
everything sort of clicked in place in my mind.
As I have quite a big head and lots of hair, I had to make a few adjustments.
So, for an adult hat cast on 64 sts with 7.00 mm needle, join in the round and work in 2x2 rib for 6 rows. In row 7 increase 8 sts evenly, as follows: k2, p2, k2, p2, m1 purlwise, 8 times, 72 sts. Change to 8 mm needles and work 1 row.
In row 9 make cable twist, as follows: slip 4 sts (2 knit and 2 purl) on cable needle and hold in back, knit 2 sts from left needle, slip 2 purl stiches on left needle, purl them, then slip 2 remaining stitches from cable needle and knit them, purl 3, repeat to the end of the round.
Make cable twist in every sixth row. After 5 twist start making decrease. Next row: work in pattern. Next row: k2, p2, k2, p1, p2tog, repeat to the end of the row, 64 sts. Next row: k2, p2tog, k2, p2tog, repeat to the end of the row, 48 sts. Next row: ssk, p1, k2tog, p1, repeat to the end of the row, 32 sts. Next row: slip 1 st, k2tog, psso, p1 ,repeat to the end of the row, 16 sts. Break yarn, leaving 20 cm tail, thread it through remaining sts and secure. I would suggest working 2 rows of pattern after final cable twist, before beginning of the decrease. I was running short on yarn, so I made only one. For extra long hat work 6 cable twists.
For a toddler hat cast on 48 sts and make 4 cable twist, otherwise it is worked in the same way as the adult hat.
