I used this pattern for the ears: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/character-hats---... holding the fun fur together with the red heart for the inner ear. And did not reverse single crochet the last row as called for but simply added 2 more rows without increasing to get more of an inward curl to the outer ear.
For the mane I used one strand of each type of yarn used for the hood and ears and looped and knotted around the stitch in each row around the hood to about 6 stitches back.
