Size Medium:
Knit cuff 20 rows (1 5/8”).
Leg:
Rnd 1 (size M only): k1tbl; pm to mark beginning of new round.
Work chart (starting from round 1), [k2, m1, k2]
x6, kte.
72 sts.
(Note: I placed 3 of the 6 increases in Rnd 1 on either side of the charted section to make it more symmetrical.)

Frogged first attempt and recast for size small.
Knit cuff for 1-5/8”.
Leg:
Rnd 1 (size S): k1tbl; pm to mark beginning of new round.
Work chart (starting from round 1), [k2, m1, k2]
x4, kte.
64 sts.
(Note: I placed 2 of the 4 increases in Rnd 1 on either side of the charted section to make it more symmetrical.)
To elongate leg, after first knitting round one as described in above notes, I knit round 2 of pattern 8 times (8 rows), then knit round 2 again to proceed with pattern. Once chart is completed, begin heel flap.*
Edited on 11/24/17. Corrected row count by removing excess rows I had put in after the chart. Notes above are now true to my final sock choices.

After knitting the leg, I realized my row count was off in my initial guage (now corrected in my notes), and I was actually getting fewer rows to the inch than I thought. My first sock leg ended up to be 7 inches long, so I ripped it back to my preferred 6 inch length. Here’s what I ended up with:
Cuff = 20 rows
Leg (after cuff) = 55 rows
(Leg rows break down as follows: Setup row = 1 row; Chart = 46 rows; Extra length inserted between rows 1 and 2 of chart = 8 rows)
With this setup, I get the leg length I like in a sock, and the twisted stitch diamond pattern is placed closer to the heel where it is most likely to be noticed and not hidden behind a pant leg. Win-win!
