This was very fun and fast to knit since it was based on a made-up 72 stitch sock knitted from the top down with a short row heel. Next time I will consider knitting toe up since I think some of the stitches are large enough that they look upside down to me. For instance, would the bottoms of the hearts look better with “v” of the stitch at the point? Perhaps.
The green and cream were based on last summer’s wedding colors. The yarn has been waiting patiently in my stash for probably more than 10 years. This baby isn’t due until mid April but my daughter inquired about a Christmas stocking for him (yes, a boy!) so I couldn’t resist. The name will have to be duplicate stitched on the cream space between the braids.
I did some additional duplicate stitching as I went along. As I knitted, there were two stitches separating the hearts so I couldn’t add the lower diamond motif as I knitted. But, when you turn the hearts right side up, the stitch direction allowed me to add them since those two upside down stitches were suddenly 1/2 a stitch, a whole stitch and another 1/2 a stitch! I’m also a sucker for pompoms!
Stocking is 21” long and 12” around…perfect size for a spoiling grandmother to add lots of goodies!
This large snowflake is a slightly modified version from a pattern that can be found here.
Final photo is the trio of Ward Family Stockings.
