4/21/19: Woad: Supposed to collect the leaves midsummer to fall. Going to try anyway, as these are older plants and probably wouldn’t have much pigment in the leaves anyway (according to Wild Color by Jenny Dean). If the woad doesn’t work, my backup is oak gall, of which I have a bag full from last year’s foraging.
05/04/19: Dyed the yarn using oak galls and iron powder. Instead of the dark grey or black I was looking for, I ended up with a silver grey. For a first attampt, it’s not horrible. Yarn has been wound into balls as the Cascade 220 seems to be tied in only one spot and if you don’t tie it down in others it tangles something fierce. My goal is to knit up a brimless cap, sort of like a beret, and then full it. Will be knitting up a swatch this evening. Will attempt a “swircle” on size 5 needles.
06/11/19: Finished with the knitting this morning and managed to spend almost an hour trying to felt/full it.
06/14/19: Finished! I sewed the bottom as intended to include a tie of sorts so the hat can accommodate a variety of LARGE sizes. AKA my boyfriend or his friend who is very enamored of the accidental purple. One of these days I will add a full account of the process here.
Based off a brimless hat in the Museum of London.
01/24/20: I may be adding this to Ravelry as a pattern soon. It’s more of a “recipe” than a pattern, but easily followed.
