I based my hat on this project, which is knit, but had excellent photos:

Elementary - Deerstalker hat by Gari Lynn (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/elementary---deer...)

I just made a basic beanie, single crochet, to the size I needed. Then I divided it into six sections, and wove in some white yarn as line markers.

Next, I added the brims. (My reference video: Bobwilson123 on YouTube - “How to Crochet a brim/peak onto a beanie” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJhdVvW2EXU)

At this point, I tried embroidering on the lines for the hat segments, but my lines kept coming out crooked. I ended up just making six simple chains and attaching them to the hat.

Then came the earflaps, which I made to match the width and shape of the hat sections. I ended up sc 12 across, with a ch1 after every turn, for about 10 rows. Then, after the ch1, decrease the first two st together, sc across, decrease last two st together - for each row. I checked after every row to see that it matched the hat segment when I lifted it up. Once it matched the segment in width and length, I just did a ch25, and finished off.

Oh, and I finished with a puff stitch for the “button” at the top of the hat.
