I tried a different technique with beginning the boots.

In the original pattern, you cast on and knit in the round, then sew up the bottom when you’re done.

Since I hate to sew by hand, I cast on, knitted a row, then picked up the stitches up the back (rather like you would for a short row toe in a toe-up sock). Now I am just knitting the rest of the pattern as usual. Given how poor I am at hand sewing, I think this is going to give a neater and stronger sole.
