I definitely enjoy having one of these on the needles for when I need some simpler knitting.

LINE WEIGHT
Trying out Purl Soho’s Line Weight for the first time. Will make a Mbgh+Newsprint set. Link to my matching Newsprint cowl.

The first cake wound strangely - almost pear-shaped or like an urn. Weird. Perhaps clinging to itself? Something weird with my winder? I took a photo - if anyone knows what this is and why it’s happening, please Comment! When I wound my second cake, I changed the angle of the winder to the swift and that cake is better formed - I think this might be it?

The cast-on was almost melty which was a bit tricky but promises a very soft fabric. Had the potential for splittiness, especially in the first few rounds, but seems to be doing well. I use bamboo DPNs for the crowns though, and my tips are a little blunted. When I switch to my ChiaoGoo circ, they are shaper metal tips. I’ll note if I encounter splittiness with those later.

This is so deliciously soft! My initial impression was the yarn seemed almost lace weight thin, but it just blooms and gosh, it’s so lovely. Pretty certain it will pill, but sometimes it’s nice to have fine, super-soft things.

CAST-ON
. KnitPink’s slow-mo Pinhole cast-on

… knit one row straight across after CO - made it easier to transfer and manage on multiple dpns. Also makes the kfb easier.

CROWNS
. increase up to 144 sts (36 per dpn)
. then 40 rounds stockinette before helical

BRIM
. Midsection - folded
… shooting for 120 rounds
… I figure the hat is folded in half, so 12” = 6” which is folded again for the brim, so 3” brim which is a little more than the height of my ear.

WEAVING ENDS AS YOU GO

… This can create a little bit of puckering
… Don’t pull too much or go too loose
… I’ve been using this one lately, and it seems to melt in a little more after blocking.

. The first trick is to start weaving in the second color before you want to use it.
… I think the video may say 10 stitches? I’m a big chicken so I go more like 15-20

. The second trick is to remember how the heck to do it when you are at the end of the helical with your first color.

HELICAL
… stop 3 sts before next color
… a little looseness is fine with transition

! Remember - the decrease crown is SSK-knit-K2tog for nicer looking lines. I got it wrong on my Tarte Mbgh and it isn’t as cool.

SIZING?
. I was thinking this felt a little smaller? But when I measured the gauge on the increase crown, I got 8 sts per inch. So we’ll see how it blocks and wears.

Wet-block on head form
. Looks and feels smaller. I thought it might stretch or expand when soaked.
. Smaller is okay, I have a few knit-worthy recipients that prefer smaller hats.

. Gifted the set to Lorie
… The hat is a snug beanie on her.
… I think she’s got the same head circumference as me - about 22”
… The brim is shorter too but she said it felt like it covered her ears well.
… January 2025 note - Saw Lorie wearing this set and the fabric has held up really well! She said there was very little pilling and she has handwashed it in cold water.
