I think I love this pattern! I’ve now made 3…here are my mods/notes:

Unlike my first Sophisticate, I will not slip the first stitch in every row. I thought this made the pick-up row look pretty loosey-goosey, which I did not like. Rather, I am knitting the first and last stitch of every row for a tight, one-stitch, garter edge.

20 rows to split.
31 rows to border (51 rows total).
27 rows to cuff. (picked up 3 additional stitches at underarm.)
Also, for the cuff, I knit one rnd, purled one round (decreasing 2 at underarm), then did 2x2 on smaller needles for 7 rounds, bind off in pattern.

Hat, cast on 56 on 6s, 18 rounds 2x2. Change to 8s, 18 rounds plain, decrease by 8s to 16, close top.

With size 6 throughout, cast on 24, 2x2 - 16 rounds.
1 round plain, 1 round buttonholes, 2 rounds plain.
Create upper with M1s on either side of center front 4 for an additional 16 sts.
4 rounds plain.
1 purl round, 1 knit round, start decreases: (p2, p2tog at ends first p round; p1, p2tog at ends second p round; k2tog at ends on k rounds)
2 stitch I-cord for ties.
